Abstract The spittlebugs Mahanarva spectabilis economically challenges cattle production of neotropical regions, due to its voracious feeding on tropical grasses. Here, we evaluated biochemical responses of the interaction between M. spectabilis and the widely cultivated tropical grasses Brachiaria spp. (i.e., brizantha and decumbens) and elephant grasses (cvs. Roxo de Botucatu and Pioneiro), regarding lipoxygenases, protease inhibitors, phytohormones, and proteolytic activities in the midgut of M. spectabilis. The M. spectabilis-infested grasses increased lipoxygenases activity, except for cv. Pioneiro. The levels of the phytohormones jasmonic and abscisic acids were similarly low in all genotypes and increased under herbivory. Furthermore, salicylic acid concentration was constitutively higher in Brachiaria sp., increasing only in spittlebug-infested B. decumbens. M. spectabilis infestations did not induce increases of protease inhibitors in any forage grass type. The trypsin activity remained unaltered, and the total proteolytic activity increased only in B. decumbens-fed insects. Our findings revealed that most forage grasses exposed to spittlebugs activate the lipoxygenases pathway, resulting in increased abscisic and jasmonic acids. However, greater amounts of these hormones do not induce protease inhibitory activity in response to spittlebug attack. This knowledge certainly helps to guide future projects aiming at reducing the impact of spittlebugs on forage production.

Se seleccionaron aislamientos de nematodos entomopatogénicos (NEPs) contra el salivazo de los pastos, Mahanarva fimbriolata. Se desarrolló un experimento en laboratorio donde ninfas de salivazo se expusieron a siete aislamientos (Steinernema anomali, S. carpocapsae, S. feltiae, S. riobravis, Heterorhabditis amazonensis RSC5, H. bacteriophora HP88 y H. baujardi LPP7) en tres concentraciones (200, 400 y 800 NEP/ninfa). Luego de la selección de los aislamientos más virulentos en laboratorio, se efectuó un experimento en invernadero. El aumento de la concentración no proporcionó incremento en la mortalidad ninfal de M. fimbriolata en laboratorio. Las ninfas de salivazo fueron susceptibles a todos los aislamientos, destacándose S. riobravis con un 90% de mortalidad, y S. feltiae con un 80%. El desempeño en invernadero no fue diferente entre los aislados, alcanzando una mortalidad ninfal de 48% (S. carpocapsae) y 72% (S. feltiae). Hay disminución de la eficiencia de los nematodos en invernadero comparada con la eficiencia en laboratorio.

We aimed to screen entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) strains against the root spittlebug, Mahanarva fimbriolata. An assay was performed at laboratory in which nymphs of the insect were exposed to seven EPNs strains (Steinernema anomali, S. carpocapsae, S. feltiae, S. riobravis, Heterorhabditis amazonensis RSC5, H. bacteriophora HP88 and H. baujardi LPP7) under three concentrations (200, 400 and 800 EPNs/nymph). After the laboratory screening a greenhouse assay was carried out using the most pathogenic strains. Increasing concentration didn't increase nymph mortality at laboratory. The root spittlebug nymphs were susceptible to all strains, with 48% (S. carpocapsae) and 72% (S. feltiae) pathogenicity extremes. A decrease in efficiency was observed in greenhouse tests compared with laboratory tests.

O afídeo Sipha flava (Forbes) ocasiona injúrias em capim-elefante e sua biologia é pouco conhecida. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da temperatura no desenvolvimento, sobrevivência e reprodução de S. flava alimentada com Pennisetum purpureum. Ninfas com até 12h de idade foram individualizadas sobre seções foliares de capim-elefante e mantidas em condições controladas (12, 16, 20, 24, 28 e 32ºC ± 1ºC, UR 70 ± 10% e fotofase de 12h). O total de 150 ninfas foi usado por tratamento, divididas em 30 repetições, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado. A temperatura base (Tb) foi de 0,83, 1,05, 3,01 e 4,98 para ninfas de primeiro, segundo, terceiro e quarto ínstares, respectivamente, indicando exigências térmicas distintas para os diferentes estádios de desenvolvimento. A Tb foi de 2,08 para a fase ninfal, verificando-se a tolerância a baixas temperaturas. Em temperaturas elevadas (28 e 32ºC), constatou-se redução significativa na sobrevivência. Embora tenha sido constatado maior período reprodutivo e longevidade a 12ºC, quando comparado às temperaturas mais altas, a fecundidade total foi substancialmente reduzida. A duração do ciclo de vida foi cerca de duas vezes maior a 12ºC em relação a 24ºC. A maior produção diária e total de ninfas foi a 24ºC. As temperaturas de 20ºC e 24ºC foram as mais favoráveis para o desenvolvimento e reprodução de S. flava.

The aphid Sipha flava (Forbes) is a pest on elephant grass, but little is known about its biology. The objective of this work was to evaluate the temperature effects on the development, survival and reproduction of S. flava fed on Pennisetum purpureum. Twelve-hour-old nymphs were individualized on sections of elephant grass blades and maintained at 12, 16, 20, 24, 28 and 32ºC ± 1ºC, UR 70 ± 10% and 12h photophase. A total of 150 nymphs were used per treatment divided in 30 replicates, using a totally random design. The lower threshold temperatures (LTT) for first, second, third and fourth instars were 0.83, 1.05, 3.01 and 4.98ºC, respectively, indicating a change in thermal requirements as the development progress. The LTT for the whole nymphal stage was 2.08ºC, pointing to the tolerance of this species to low temperatures. A significant reduction in survival was observed at high temperatures (28 and 32ºC). Although the reproductive periods were longer and insects lived longer at 12ºC as compared with those at higher temperatures, the total fecundity was substantially reduced. The overall life cycle duration was almost twice as long at 12ºC than at 24ºC. The greatest daily production of nymphs and greatest number of nymphs produced overall occurred at 24ºC. The temperatures of 20ºC and 24ºC were more suitable to S. flava development and reproduction.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de silicato de cálcio (CaSiO3) e do ativador acibenzolar-S-methyl (BTH) na indução de resistência em pepino à mosca-branca Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) biótipo B. Testes de preferência com e sem chance de escolha e de antibiose foram realizados em casa-de-vegetação e no laboratório do Departamento de Entomologia da Universidade Federal de Lavras/UFLA, MG. O delineamento foi o inteiramente ao acaso com os seguintes tratamentos: 1) testemunha, 2) aplicação de 3 g de silicato de cálcio.kg-1 de substrato, 3) duas aplicações de 200 ml de solução a 1% de silicato de cálcio/vaso, 4) duas aplicações de 100 ml de solução a 0,005% de BTH/vaso e 5) aplicação de silicato de cálcio e BTH na mesma dose dos tratamentos 3 e 4. Para eliminar o efeito isolado do cálcio, foi aplicado 1g de carbonato de cálcio.kg-1 de substrato no tratamento 1 (testemunha). O silicato de cálcio e BTH causaram efeitos negativos na população da mosca-branca pela redução da oviposição, aumento do ciclo biológico e da mortalidade na fase de ninfa. Apresentaram-se, assim, como produtos alternativos a serem utilizados no manejo integrado de mosca-branca na cultura de pepino.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of calcium silicate (CaSiO3) and of the activator acibenzolar-S-methyl (BTH) on resistance induction in cucumber, against the whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) biotype B. Antibiosis, free-choice and no-choice preference tests were conducted in a greenhouse and at laboratory of the, Departamento de Entomologia of the Universidade Federal de Lavras (UFLA), MG, Brazil. The design was completely randomized, with the following treatments: 1) control; 2) application of 3 g calcium silicate.kg-1 of substrate; 3) two 200ml applications of 1% calcium silicate solution per pot; 4) two 100ml applications of 0.005% BTH solution per pot; and 5) application of calcium silicate and BTH at the rates used for treatments 3 and 4. To eliminate the effect of calcium, treatment 1 (control) received 1g of calcium carbonate (control). Calcium silicate and BTH diminished the whitefly population by reducing oviposition and increasing cycle length and mortality at the nymphal stage and can be chemical alternatives for the whitefly integrated management in cucumber.

Os aspectos biológicos de Pseudodorus clavatus (Fabricius), alimentada com Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), foram avaliados em diferentes temperaturas, visando obter informações para o controle biológico de afídeos. Ovos do predador foram individualizados em discos de folhas de sorgo, mantidos em placas de Petri, às temperaturas de 16, 19, 22, 25, 28 e 31 ºC e 12h de fotofase. Ninfas e adultos de S. graminum foram oferecidos ad libitum. Avaliou-se o número de ínstares, a duração e sobrevivência de cada ínstar, bem como das fases larval e pupal e do período de larva a adulto de P. clavatus. A temperatura base e a constante térmica também foram estimadas. A duração dos três ínstares de P. clavatus variou na razão inversa da temperatura. Houve redução das fases larval (14,9 para 4,9 dias) e pupal (17,2 para 4,2 dias) e do período de larva a adulto (31,7 para 8,8 dias) quando as larvas foram mantidas a 16ºC e 31ºC, respectivamente. As temperaturas bases estimadas foram de 10,8; 11,0 e 10,8ºC para as fases larval, pupal e para o período de larva a adulto, respectivamente. Em todas as temperaturas estudadas a sobrevivência do primeiro ínstar foi superior a 78% e do segundo e terceiro instares foi superior a 94%. As sobrevivências da pupa e do período de larva a adulto foram maiores a 22ºC e menores a 16ºC e 31ºC. O desenvolvimento completo de P. clavatus, alimentada com S. graminum, foi possível em todas as temperaturas testadas, que variaram de 16ºC a 31ºC.

Biological aspects of the predator Pseudodorus clavatus (Fabricius) fed on Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) were studied at different temperatures, in order to obtain information to be used in biological control of aphids. Eggs of the predator were individualized on sorghum leaf disks, kept in petri dishes and maintained at constant temperatures of 16, 19, 22, 25, 28 or 31ºC, with 12h photophase. After larval hatching, nymphs and adults of S. graminum were offered to the predator ad libitum. The duration and survival of each instar, of the larva, pupa, and larva-adult were determined. The lower threshold temperature and thermal constant were also estimated. The mean duration of the development for the three instars of P. clavatus varied inversely with temperature. Reductions were observed in the duration of the larval stage (from 14.9 to 4.9 days), the pupal stage (from 17.2 to 4.2 days) and in the period from larva to adult (from 31.7 to 8.8 days), at 16ºC and 31ºC, respectively. The lower threshold temperatures were 10.8, 11.0, and 10.8ºC for larva, pupa and larva-adult, respectively. Survival was above 78% for first-instar larvae, and above 94% for second- and third-instar larvae. The highest pupae and larva-adult survival were observed at 22ºC and the lowest survival occurred at 16ºC and 31ºC. The complete development of P. clavatus, fed on S. graminum was achieved at all tested temperatures, that varied from 16ºC to 31ºC.

Com esta pesquisa objetivou-se verificar o consumo de Uroleucon ambrosiae em diferentes densidades, por larvas de Chrysoperla externa provenientes de diferentes regimes alimentares, em casa-de-vegetação. Ninfas de 3º e 4º ínstares do afídeo foram separadas nas densidades 30, 40 e 50, e colocadas nas plantas de alface (35 dias de idade), as quais, foram envolvidas por gaiola de armação de ferro de 27x27x26 cm cobertas com tecido “voil” e acoplada nos tubos de PVC do cultivo hidropônico. Quatro horas após, uma larva de C. externa, de diferentes ínstares e previamente alimentadas com U. ambrosiae ou ovos de Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier, 1819), foi liberada próximo à colônia de afídeos, sendo a gaiola fechada imediatamente; o mesmo procedimento foi adotado sem que a larva fosse confinada. Após quarenta e oito horas, realizou-se a contagem do número de afídeos consumidos em cada densidade de presa disponível. A eficiência do predador, confinado em gaiola, foi de 12,46%, 13,63% e 25,76% para larvas de 1º, 2º e 3º ínstares previamente alimentadas com ovos de S. cerealella; 9,59% e 17,63% para aquelas de 2º e 3º ínstares alimentadas anteriormente com ninfas de U. ambrosiae, respectivamente e de 18,62% para larvas de 3º ínstar previamente alimentadas com ovos do lepidóptero no 1º ínstar e ninfas dos afídeos no 2º instar; no entanto, para larvas não confinadas, não foram verificadas diferenças significativas na eficiência. Nas densidades de 40 e 50 afídeos, as porcentagens de predação (18,30 e 18,72, respectivamente) foram significativamente superiores quando comparada à densidade 30 (11,79); para testes sem confinamento, não houve influência da densidade da presa na resposta do predador. Assim, o alimento fornecido às larvas de C. externa antes de serem liberadas em casa-de-vegetação, o confinamento das mesmas e a densidade de U. ambrosiae disponível influenciaram o potencial de consumo do predador.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the consumption of Uroleucon ambrosiae in different densities by Chrysoperla externa larvae derived from different alimentary regimes, in greenhouse conditions. The 3rd and 4th instars nymphs of the aphid were separated in the densities 30, 40, 50 and put on the lettuce plants (35 days old) which were kepted in a voil cage of 27x27x26 cm connected to the PVC tube used for hydroponic cultivation. After four hours, one larva of C. externa previously fed with U. ambrosiae or eggs of Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier, 1819) was released near the aphid colony, with the lettuce plant being immediately covered. The same procedure was adopted without confinement of the larvae. The different instars of C. externa were evaluated, through counting of the aphids after forty eight hours. The efficiencies of the predator, confined in a cage, were 12.46, 13.63 and 25.76% for 1st, 2nd and 3th instars which were previously fed with eggs of S. cerealella. For 2nd and 3rd instar larvae fed with aphids, the efficiencies were 9.59 and 17.63%, respectively. Efficiency was 18.62% for 3th instar larvae fed previously with eggs of the lepidopterous in the 1st instar and with nymphs of aphids in the 2nd ínstar.However, for larvae without confinement, there were no differences among the instars or alimentary regimes. In the densities of 40 and 50 aphids, the percentages of predation (18.3 and 18.72, respectively) were significantly superior as compared with density 30 (11.79). There was no influence of density of prey in response to predator in the experiments without confinement. Thus, the food provided to C. externa larvae before releasing into a greenhouse, their confinement and available density of U. ambrosiae influenced the potential of consumption of the predator.

Feeding potential of Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) (Neuroptera, Chrysopidae) in different densities of Uroleucon ambrosiae (Thomas) (Hemiptera, Aphididae). The feeding potential of 2nd and 3rd instar larvae of Chrysoperla externa (Hagen, 1861) in relation to different densities of 30, 40 and 50 nymphs of Uroleucon ambrosiae (Thomas, 1878) at 3rd and 4th instars was evaluated. The treatments were individualized into 2.5 cm in diameter and 8.5 cm tall flat bottom glass vials and maintained in a controlled environmental chamber at 25±2 ºC temperature, 70±10% RH and 14 h photophase. A completely randomized experimental design with 10 replications was used. The consumption of the prey nymphs by the predator larvae was evaluated after 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 24 h from the beginning of the experiment and at every subsequent 24 h period until 2nd instar larvae molted or 3rd instar larvae pupated. Results have shown that for 2nd instar larvae, during the 1 h to 24 h period, there was a decreasing prey consumption at the 30 and 40 prey densities. However an increase in the consumption at the 50 prey density was observed. After this period, C. externa larvae presented a progressive increase on nymphs consumption as a function of the prey density. The same occurred with de 3rd instar predator larvae in all treatments. When daily mean consumption was evaluated the predator/prey ratio was 1:23, 1:27 and 1:33 for 2nd instar larvae and 1:27, 1:33 and 1:41 for 3rd instar larvae at 30, 40 and 50 nymph densities, respectively.

A ocorrência de afideos foi avaliada em alface cultivada hidroponicamente na área de produção da Escola Agrotécnica da Universidade Estadual de São Paulo (UNESP), em Jaboticabal, São Paulo, de janeiro a dezembro de 1999. Foi constatado que o número total de cada espécie de afideo, presentes em amostragens conduzidas semanalmente durante o período, foi correlacionada com a média de temperaturas registradas dentro do período de amostragem. Foi registrada a ocorrência de três espécies de afideos, Uroleucon ambrosiae (Thomas), Myzus persicae (Sulzer) e Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas), sendo as maiores densidades populacionais coincidentes com médias de temperaturas inferiores a 21,5°C. As maiores densidades populacionais de U. ambrosiae ocorreram de maio a junho. Na segunda semana de maio e na terceira semana de novembro foram registrados dois picos populacionais máximos de M. persicae. A espécie M. euphorbiae predominou sobre as demais e as maiores populações dessa espécie foram observadas nos períodos de maio a junho e final de julho a início se setembro. Foi constatada correlação negativa entre populações de afideos e temperatura. Esta correlação, entretanto, foi estatisticamente significativa somente para M. euphorbiae e U. ambrosiae.

The occurrence of aphids was evaluated on lettuce hydroponically grown at the Escola Agrotécnica of the State University of São Paulo (UNESP) located in Jaboticabal County, State of São Paulo, Brazil, from January to December 1999. The total number of each species of aphids present in weekly samplings performed during the period was found to be correlated with the average temperature recorded within the respective sampling period. The occurrence of three species, Uroleucon ambrosie (Thomas), Myzus persicae (Sulzer) and Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas) was recorded, with the highest population densities being coincident with mean temperatures below 21.5°C. The highest population densities of U. ambrosie occurred from May to June. In the second week of May and third week of November, two maximum population peaks were recorded for M. persicae. The species M. euphorbiae was predominant over the others and the highest populations of this species were observed from May to June and from late July to early September. A negative correlation was found between populations of aphids and temperature. This correlation, however, was statistically significant only for M. euphorbiae and U. ambrosiae.

Searching and handling time of Chrysoperla externa (Hagen, 1861) (Neuroptera, Chrysopidae) larvae fed on Uroleucon ambrosiae (Thomas, 1878) (Hemiptera, Aphididae). The objective of this research was to determine the searching and handling times of three larval instars of C. externa fed on U. ambrosiae at densities of 30, 40 and 50 per vial, with the feeding of the larvae at the preceding instars being U. ambrosiae nymphs or Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier, 1819) eggs. The larvae were maintained at 25 ± 2 ºC, 70 ± 10% RH and a 14-h photophase. A completely randomized design in a 6 x 3 factorial scheme with 12 replicates was adopted. The shortest searching time was found for the 2nd and 3rd instar larvae of C. externa, and this parameter was variable depending on the feeding given to the larvae previously. The handling time was similar for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd instar larvae. The longest searching time was found at an aphid density of 30, as compared to densities of 40 and 50 prey, with which there were no significant differences. Prey density did not have any influence on handling time.

Foram avaliados os aspectos biológicos dos estádios imaturos de Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) e Ceraeochrysa cincta (Schneider), alimentados com ovos e ninfas de Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) biótipo B. Ovos dos predadores foram individualizados em recipientes de vidro de fundo chato com 2,5 cm de diâmetro e 8,5 cm de altura que foram mantidos à temperatura de 25±2ºC, UR de 70±10% e fotofase de 14h. Após a eclosão das larvas, discos de folhas de tomateiro e de couve com 2 cm de diâmetro, contendo ovos e ninfas de B. tabaci, respectivamente, foram colocados nos recipientes. A duração e a viabilidade de cada ínstar e da fase pupal de ambas as espécies predadoras alimentadas com diferentes estágios da presa foram avaliados. Larvas de primeiro ínstar de C. externa apresentaram desenvolvimento mais lento quando alimentadas com ovos de B. tabaci biotipo B monstrando influência do estágio da presa fornecida no período de desenvolvimento do predador. O mesmo não ocorreu para a espécie C. cincta. O desenvolvimento de larvas de primeiro ínstar de ambas as espécies predadoras foi semelhante quando foram alimentadas com ovos de B. tabaci; porém C. cincta apresentou período de desenvolvimento mais longo (5,4 dias) comparada a C. externa (4,0 dias) quando alimentada com ninfas da presa. Para larvas de segundo e terceiro ínstares e para a duração da fase larval não houve influência do estágio da presa fornecida (ovo ou ninfa) no período de desenvolvimento. A duração do segundo ínstar foi maior para C. cincta do que para C. externa (4,8 e 4,1 dias, respectivamente). Porém a duração do terceiro instar foi maior e da fase larval foi menor para C. externa (6,6 e 15,3 dias, respectivamente) do que para C. cincta (6,4 e 16,7 dias, respectivamente). A viabilidade dos ínstares foi acima de 90% para ambas as espécies. No entanto, menor porcentagem de viabilidade da fase de pupa foi registrada para C. cincta, quando alimentada com ovos (30%) ou ninfas (55,6%).

The biological aspects of immature stages of Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) and Ceraeochrysa cincta (Schneider) fed on eggs and nymphs of Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) biotype B were evaluated. Eggs of the predators were individualized into 2.5 cm in diameter and 8.5 cm tall flat bottom glass vials which were maintained 25±2ºC temperature, 70±10% RH and 14h photophase. After larvae eclosion, 2 cm in diameter disks of tomato and cabbage leaves containing eggs and nymphs of B. tabaci, respectively, were then placed in the vials. Duration and viability of each larval instar as well as of the pupal phase of both predator species fed on different stage of the prey were evaluated. First-instar larvae of C. externa had longer development when fed on eggs of B. tabaci biotype B, thus showing that the stage of the prey offered did affect the developmental period. The same did not occur for C. cincta. The development of the 1st-instar larvae of both predator species was similar when fed on B. tabaci eggs; however, C. cincta presented a longer development period (5.4 days) as compared to C. externa (4.0 days) when fed on nymphs of the prey. For 2nd- and 3rd-instar larvae and for the duration of the larval phase there was no effect of the stage of the prey offered (egg or nymph) on the developmental period. The duration of the 2nd instar was longer for C. cincta than for C. externa (4.8 and 4.1 days, respectively). However the duration of the 3rd instar was longer and the larval phase was shorter for C. externa (6.6 and 15.3 days, respectively) than for C. cincta (6.4 and 16.7 days, respectively). The larval instars viability was above 90% for both species. Nevertheless, lower percent viability of the pupal phase was recorded for C. cincta, when fed on eggs (30%) or nymphs (55.6%).

A biologia de Hippodamia convergens Guérin-Meneville foi estudada utilizando-se ovos de Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) como alimento das larvas, em comparação com dieta comumente utilizada, constituída de adultos dos pulgões Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) e Brachycaudus (Appelia) schwartzi Börner. Para os adultos do predador, utilizaram-se adultos do pulgão S. graminum. Os experimentos foram conduzidos a 25 ± 1°C, UR de 70 ± 10% e fotofase de 12 h. O período embrionário, quando as larvas foram alimentadas com as três dietas foi de 3,1; 3,2 e 3,2 dias respectivamente. A duração do período de larva a adulto foi maior na dieta constituída de ovos de A. kuehniella (19,5 dias), entretanto a viabilidade para esse período não diferiu entre as três dietas testadas. Para a fase adulta do predador oriundo de larvas criadas sob os três regimes alimentares, todos os parâmetros reprodutivos e a longevidade foram estatisticamente iguais. Assim, verificou-se que ovos de A. kuehniella podem ser considerados uma dieta em potencial, em substituição aos pulgões S. graminum e B. schwartzi na criação de larvas de H. convergens.

The biology of Hippodamia convergens Guérin-Meneville was studied on three diets, at temperature 25 ± 1°C; 70 ± 10% RH and 12 hours photofase. Eggs of Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) and two species of aphids, Schizaphis graminum ( Rondani) and Brachycaudus (Appelia) schwartzi Börner, were fed to the larvae. S. graminum was fed to the adults. The lenght of the larval-adult period of H. convergens was higher when the larvae fed on eggs of A. kuehniella (19.5 days), than when they fed on the aphids S. graminum (17.0 days) or B. schwartzi (17.9 days). However, the viability of larva-adult period showed no significant difference among all three tested diets. Longevity and all the reproductive parameters at the adult phase of H. convergens showed no significant difference when the larvae were reared on the three diets. Eggs of A. kuehniella were shown as a suitable alternative food, that be used as a substitute of the aphids, the most commom prey to larvae rearing of H. convergens.

Avaliou-se a influência dos tricomas glandulares da batata Solanum berthaultii no desenvolvimento larval, mortalidade e capacidade de predação de Scymnus (Pullus) argentinicus (Weise) sobre o pulgão Myzus persicae (Sulzer). Verificou-se que o desenvolvimento larval do predador foi interrompido pela alta mortalidade (89%) no 1° ínstar, provavelmente pela ação dos tricomas glandulares de S. berthaultii. Quando o predador foi liberado nos diferentes ínstares e adultos, observou-se mortalidade larval no 1°, 2° e 3° ínstares em S. berthaultii pela ação dos tricomas glandulares, sendo que o 4° ínstar e adulto não foram afetados. Em S. tuberosum não foi observada mortalidade do predador. A capacidade de predação de S. (Pullus) argentinicus foi significativamente superior na batata S. tuberosum em relação a S. berthaultii em todos os ínstares e adultos. A mortalidade de M. persicae foi superior em S. tuberosum (por predação) em relação aos valores observados em S. berthaultii (pela ação combinada do predador e tricomas glandulares).

The effect of glandular trichomes of wild potato plant Solanum berthaultii, on larval development, survival and prey capacity of Scymnus (Pullus) argentinicus (Weise) on the aphid Myzus persicae (Sulzer) was studied. The larval development of the predator was interrupted due the high mortality (89%) on the 1st instar, probably due to the action of glandular trichomes of S. berthaultii. It was observed also mortality of 1st, 2nd and 3rd instars when S. argentinicus was liberated on S. berthaultii. The 4th instar and the adult stage of the predator were not affected by the glandular trichomes. It was not observed mortality of S. argentinicus on S. tuberosum and the prey capacity of S. (Pullus) argentinicus was significantly higher on S. tuberosum when compared to S. berthaultii, in all instars and adult. The mortality of M. persicae was higher in S. tuberosum (by predation) when compared to S. berthaultii (by the combined action of predator and glandular trichomes).

Avaliou-se a resposta funcional, o tempo de busca e de manuseio da presa pelo predador Scymnus (Pullus) argentinicus(Weise). Como alimento foram oferecidas ninfas de 3º e 4º ínstares do pulgão verde Schizaphis graminum (Rond.). O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 3 x 5, em três densidades (10, 25 e 35) de ninfas do pulgão e quatro ínstares larvais e adulto do predador, em 10 repetições. Os insetos foram mantidos a 25 ± 1ºC, 70 ± 10% UR e fotofase de 14 horas. Tanto para larvas como para adultos de S. (Pullus) argentinicus, a quantidade de ninfas predadas aumentou com o incremento da densidade da presa, até atingir um platô (resposta funcional Tipo II ). A capacidade predatória no 4º ínstar foi maior em relação a todos os outros ínstares e diferiu significativamente na densidade de 35 ninfas, quando comparada com as densidades de 10 e 25, o mesmo ocorrendo para machos e fêmeas. O incremento da predação foi maior ao passar da densidade 10 para 25, tornando-se menor ao passar de 25 para 35. O tempo de busca aumentou gradualmente com a idade do predador, enquanto que o tempo de manuseio decresceu com a idade. Em um mesmo período, as fêmeas predaram mais que os machos e também buscaram a presa mais rapidamente.

The functional response, search time and handling time of the predator Scymnus (Pullus) argentinicus (Weise) were evaluated. Nymphs of 3rdand 4th instars of the greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rond.), were provided as food. The statistical design was randomly in a factorial 3 x 5, with three densities of the greenbug (10, 25, 35 nymphs) and four instars and adult of the predator, in 10 replications. Tests were conducted in an environmental chamber at 25± 1ºC, 70± 10% RH and 14 hours photophase. For both larvae and adults of S. (Pullus) argentinicus the amount of predated nymphs increased with the increment of aphid densities, until reaching a plateau (functional response Type II). Predation in the 4th instar was higher and greater for the density of 35 nymphs compared to the densities of 10 and 25 nymphs. The increment in predation increased, from density 10 to 25, but decreased at density 25 to 35 nymphs. The search time incresead gradually with the age of the predator, while the handling time decreased with the age. Adult females presented higher predation and searched faster for prey than males. Searching time decreased with the increase in aphid density.

Estudou-se a ocorrência e a flutuação populacional dos inimigos naturais (predadores e parasitóides), associados ao pulgão Brachycaudus schwartzi (Börner), em pessegueiro (Prunus persica). Foram amostrados quinzenalmente de agosto de 1994 a julho de 1995, dois ramos de aproximadamente 25 cm por planta em 10 plantas. No laborátório, foi realizada a triagem e contagem dos pulgões e de seus inimigos naturais. Constatou-se a presença de predadores das famílias Coccinellidae (seis espécies) e Syrphidae (sete espécies) e também do parasitóide Aphidius colemani Viereck (Aphidiidae). Os predadores foram mais abundantes de agosto a dezembro de 1994, coincidindo com a maior ocorrência do pulgão B. schwartzi. Dentre as espécies de coccinelídeos amostradas, a espécie Scymnus (Pullus) argentinicus (Weise) destacou-se, correspondendo a 43,9% do total de coccinelídeos amostrados. Os coccinelídeos apresentaram o pico populacional no mês de outubro. A espécie Allograpta neotropica Curran (Syrphidae) foi a de maior ocorrência, com maior pico em setembro, correpondendo a 86,7% dos sirfídeos amostrados. O pico populacional de A. colemani significativo também ocorreu no mês de setembro.

The occurrence and population fluctuation of natural enemies (predators and parasitods) associated with Brachycaudus schwartzi.(Börner) were studied on peach (Prunus persica). Two twigs 25 cm long were sampled every 15 days in 10 plants from August 1994 to July 1995 and taken to the laboratory for assessing the incidence of aphids and their natural enemies. Over the period of greatest aphid occurrence, predators of the families Coccinellidae (six species) and Syrphidae (seven species) and the parasitoid Aphidius colemani Viereck (Aphidiidae) were observed. Predators occurred at higher incidence from August to December, 1994, where occurrence of B. schwartzi was greatest. Among the species of Coccinellidae surveyed, the occurrence of Scymnus (Pullus) argentinicus (Weise) was higher and represented 43,9% of the total coccinellids surveyed. The coccinellid population peaked in October. The species Allograpta neotropica Curran (Syrphidae) showed highest occurrence (86,7%) among Syrphidae and its population peaked in September as did A. colemani.
